Pi Day @ Deal
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for Deal students to celebrate math, recite the infinite digits of Pi, and enjoy circular treats.
Pi Day Objectives
Grade 6
Math 6: Students will use yarn and circles to develop the concept of Pi.
Math 7: Students will calculate the volume of cylindrical objects.
Grade 7
Students will be able to discover pi with pennies in order to make a prediction about the circumference of a circle.
Grade 8
Students will be able to use the dimensions of a bubble in order to create multiple representations of a proportional relationship between circumference and diameter.
Because pi is an irrational number — meaning the numbers never end and never fall into a repeating pattern — we will also celebrate Pi Day with pi recitation contest!
Students, staff, and families are encouraged to wear their Pi Day gear and donate circular treats for math class.
