Principal’s Message

Teacher Appreciation Week | May 6 - 10

Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated annually throughout the USA during the first week of May. The history of this national holiday dates back to 1953 when First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt, urged Congress to set an official holiday to celebrate the important work of educators across the country. A former teacher and motivated education activist, First Lady Roosevelt frequently received letters from teachers who detailed their vital work and requests for public recognition. It would take another 27 years before an official national day would be instituted.

The first US National Teacher Day was celebrated on March 7, 1980, before moving to May in 1984. At the recommendation of the National Parent Teacher Association in the USA, the celebration was expanded to the first week of May, now formally known as Teacher Appreciation Week.

The theme for this year's Teacher Appreciation week is Teachers are "Shining Stars!  Making the World Brighter One Student at a Time."

Deal students and families are asked to help us celebrate and honor our shining stars by sharing expressions of gratitude throughout the week.
