Food Drive Thank You, Start of Term 2

Principal’s Message

Happy Sunday!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who supported yesterday's Community Food Drive. Not only was it great to see so many families, but it was also truly rewarding to be able to support our students as they gave back to the community while participating in service learning.

Thank you for supporting the GirlUp Club's Collection of feminine products for young girls in the city. Currently, 8th grade is leading in the collection. Members of the club will be in front of the school from 8:15 am to 8:45 am to collect items this week.

Shout out to Shaka J. Greene and the Bravo Zulu Chess Academy for joining us at yesterday's event. We are looking forward to our partnership. Finally, a heartfelt hug to the ADCA Events Team, parent/student-volunteers, and Ms. Garcia for ALL you did to make our event such a success!

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) @ Deal This Week
According to the collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), self-awareness is the ability to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts. This includes capacities to recognize one’s strengths and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose.

This week, students will explore the connection between self-awareness and having a growth mindset.

Diverse Family and Friends Meet Up

COVID-19 Vaccinations

In partnership with DC Health, pediatric COVID-19 vaccination clinics will open at select schools for children ages 5-11, and any DCPS student or DC youth these ages can stop by to get their first dose. School clinics will be open Monday-Saturday and hours vary by location.  Students ages 5-11 should visit an elementary school location, while students ages 12 and older can visit a secondary school clinic, including our youth incentive site at Columbia Heights Education Campus.

As a reminder, student-athletes ages 12 and older must submit proof of a full dosage of COVID-19 vaccination to their school athletic director by December 1, 2021, to compete in sports this school year.   Information for families is also available online at

ANet Math Assessment

6th, 7th, and 8th graders will participate in the ANet assessment this week in Math class. ANet is an interim used to assess students’ progress towards mastery of the standards from the past unit of instruction.  Teachers use the data from ANet to gauge student progress and inform instruction.

DC Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

Deal students will take the Youth Risk Behavior Survey on November 16 (6th grade), 17 (7th grade), and 18 (8th grade). This survey provides important information on the types of supports and interventions the District of Columbia provides for our youth. Information about the content of the survey can be found by going to the OSSE site linked here - DC Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) | OSSE .

Families are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the type of questions being asked so they can anticipate some student reactions ahead of time. The six topic areas that are covered through this survey are:  behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual risk behaviors, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity.

Families may elect for their student NOT to participate in the survey by completing and returning an opt-out form to the student’s 1st-period teacher.  Physical copies of opt-out forms will be sent home with students tomorrow.  Electronic versions are available here - https://osse.dc.gov/node/1107132.

International Culture Fest 2021

Our school is a culturally diverse community and we have a lot to share with each other. With students from over 15 countries speaking more than 10 languages, there is a lot of culture to explore. During the week of November 15-19, we will post about our various cultures via our ADCA Instagram page. Let's share your favorite recipes, music, songs, stories, costumes. Complete this FORM to indicate your interest and how you wish to participate. Together we can make it an amazing experience for everyone!
