Pi Day @ Deal

Pi Day is typically celebrated on March 14 (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.  Pi Day is an annual opportunity for Deal students to celebrate math, recite the infinite digits of Pi, and enjoy circular treats.

This year, we will celebrate Pi Day during math classes on Monday, March 17. The Digits of Pi Recitation Competition will take place during our lunch periods.  Students should let their math teachers know if they are interested in competing at the beginning of the day.

Pi Day Learning Objectives

Grade 6

  • Math 6 - By the end of the lesson, students will develop the concept of pi by examining the ratio between the diameter and the circumference of a circle.

  • Math 7 - By the end of the lesson, students will calculate the volume of cylindrical or conical objects.

Grade 7

  • Math 7 - By the end of the lesson, SWBAT collect and utilize “penny data” in order to determine if Pi represents a proportional relationship

  • Math 8 - By the end of the lesson, SWBAT collect and utilize “penny data” in order to determine if Pi represents a proportional relationship

Grade 8

  • Math 8 - Calculate volume of hemispheres using soap and straws (make a bubble)

  • Algebra I - Calculate volume of hemispheres using soap and straws (make a bubble)

  • Geometry - Use circles to discover the scaling principle of area

  • Algebra II - Students will solve trigonometric equations

Students are welcome to bring circular treats to enjoy during their math class!
