Deal Speech and Debate

This weekend the Viking Lincoln-Douglas and Policy debaters attended the second Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensics League  (WACFL) tournament at Lightridge High School in Aldie, Virginia and brought home some impressive results—especially since Deal debaters were the ONLY middle school debaters in attendance among 31 high schools and over 300 debaters.

In the policy debate division, 8th graders Josie Casper and Venya Gulati were not only the first middle school team to compete in policy debate in this league’s 50+ year history but they finished the tournament in first place with an undefeated record and qualified to attend the league’s Metro-final tournament which serves as the national qualifying event for high school students.  It should also be noted that these ladies are also the first policy debate team in the history of Alice Deal to achieve such accolades!  WOW!

In the Lincoln-Douglas Junior Varsity division, Juliet Tomlinson achieved a 3-1 record and earned a half bid towards the Metro-final tournament.

In the Lincoln-Douglas Novice division the following debaters also earned a 3-1 record and earned the right to move up to the junior varsity division where they too can earn Metro-Final qualification.

  • Nora Kaprowski (8th grade)

  • Annie Stillerman (8th grade)

  • Teddy Wallsten (7th grade)

Shout out to Mr. Stroud and Ms. Grimm, our awesome debate coaches.
