Pi Day @ Deal

6th, 7th, and 8th graders will celebrate the mathematical constant pi (π) during math classes tomorrow.

  • Math 6 students will develop the concept of pi in their math class on Monday, March 14 by participating in an inquiry lesson in which they will examine the ratio between the diameter and the circumference of a circle.

  • Math 7 (6th grade) students will find the volume of cylindrical or conical objects.

  • Grade 7 students will participate in a team celebration on Monday, March 14 by participating in a simulation in which they will identify the proportional relationship between the diameter and the circumference of a circle.

  • Grade 8 students will develop the concept of pi in their math class on Monday, March 14 by participating in an exploration of an ancient Egyptian method for calculating the area of a circle, without knowing the exact value of Pi. 3500 years ago, ancient Egyptians had an estimate for Pi that was less than 1% off from the actual value. Why do you think this accurate estimate would be useful to engineers at the time?
