Deal Speech and Debate

This weekend the Deal debaters participated in the Washington-Arlington Forensics League Metro-final championships.  The tournament is the final local/regional tournament for the year.  Deal was the only middle school competing against high school debaters from DC, Virginia, and Maryland.

After many hard-fought rounds of debate over two days, the Deal varsity debaters receiving recognition were Zoe Becker (5th place) and Max Tatton (6th place).  Most remarkably, Zoe and Max actually qualified to attend the national high school tournament with their outstanding performances, but are prohibited from attending because of their ages.

In the Junior Varsity division, Deal walked away with a sweep at the top of the awards podium:

  • Isaac Wallsten—Tournament Champion with an undefeated record!

  • Will Pfaffenroth—2nd place with a 5-1 record

  • Finn Farrell—8th place with a 4-2 record

Congratulations to all the debaters for their outstanding performances!  Next up are the team’s two middle school national tournaments, the Tournament of Champions (May) and the National Middle School Speech and Debate Tournament in early June.
