Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in June 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. We hope you and your family were able to participate in the myriad of Juneteenth events that took place this weekend. Information about Juneteenth is available in a Juneteenth Discussion with Kelly Navies.
Please consider visiting the National Gallery of Art exhibit, Afro Atlantic Histories. The exhibition takes an in-depth look at the historical experiences and cultural formations of Black and African people since the 17th century. More than 130 powerful works of art, including paintings, sculpture, photographs, and time-based media by artists from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, bring these narratives to life.
In observance of Juneteenth, there is no school for students tomorrow, June 20.
